I believe that Pinkerton is your average one track minded American but in some ways I believe that he does love madam butterfly I think that the peer pressure on him from his friends and family back in America are what drives him to marry an American woman besides what he said about marrying an American woman on the marriage contract.
Butterfly is a naive young woman who was willing to believe that Pinkerton would return with love for her and her son. I feel like she should have forced herself to live for her son at the least
I feel like the opera tells us that the United States was a place of dreams for foreigners, it seems like madam Butterfly’s ideas on America were a little farfetched. Gauging by Pinkerton's attitude toward marrying a n on American woman prove that America was a aristocratic society at this point because they value purity and money much more highly than madam Butterfly’s family does.
