The Merchants tale

Fabliaux as defined by dictionary.com is “A medieval verse tale characterized by comic, ribald treatment of themes drawn from life” and Chaucer uses these throughout his Canterbury tales
The song Lying eyes says “every form of refuge has its price” and I feel like Chaucer is saying the exact same thing only in his own words because in the merchants tale the noble man is looking for a wife in his old age and he asks the gods to help him in his quest but he is to specific in his quest and chooses a madden beautiful in appearance but ugly at heart because she doesn’t love him back and she falls for another man and as her husband gets older he loses his eyesight and she is able to cheat on him even more the gods grant her husband his eye sight back so he may view her cheating on him and the lady twists what he sees into a confusing mass and her husband believes her story despite what he saw. I feel like the underlying meaning in this is that humans only see what they wish to see and I feel like the old noble man wanted to believe his wife and didn’t want to believe that she was cheating on him so when he actually saw it with his own eyes she was able to mold his view to her benefit which makes the old man a fool I feel like this story is didactic because not only is there one hidden meaning I feel like there are many hidden meanings in the story. For example and man is a fool for a beautiful woman he could have chosen a ugly faithful woman but he instead choose a beautiful cheating whore.
